Art & Power Today we started studying a song entitled ( called ) Go Down Moses . We noticed it was a music sheet, with lyrics and musical notes. This song belongs to ( appartient à ) the Gospel genre. It tells the story of Moses, the Hebrew prophet who helped the Hebrews to escape Egypt where they were slaves. Then we also talked about the American Civil War, when the North fought against the South, and after which slavery was abolished. After that, we watched a short passage from 12 Years a Slave and compared it with the Gospel song. They are similar : they're both slow and repetitive (rhythm), and the melody consists in a lead singer (the preacher, or the main worker) singing the lines, and the choir (or backing vocals, or other slaves) repeating the main lines ( Let my people go , or Lord, Lord ).
