Art & Power gr. B

 Today we started working on Art & Power. We looked at a music sheet entitled (called) Go Down, Moses. Moses is the name of a Biblical character, he was a prophet who split the Dead Sea into two to save slaves.

This type of music is called Gospel. It's a religious music with no instruments that's played in church. It was invented by African-Americans.

The lyrics seemed simple, even basic.

- This text is about the death of a man in NY, a man in his 30s. It's about death on Facebook, what they do when people die. - In the text, we can see a man who talks about his dead friend, he's sharing news of his friend's death - His name is Anthony Dowdell, he was 39 years old. We saw Dowdell's facebook wall. He had a smile on his face - He was a shining person, no one among his friends knows why he killed himself.  HOMEWORK (next Friday): check out the four propositions about the text : are they right or wrong ? Art & Power 4 gr A

  Today we worked on a different music style, Soul music. We started by listening to Al Green's Let's Stay Together .  We found the song was slow and a bit repetitive, with a verse and a chorus. there was also a male singer singing in Falsetto, and backing vocals. The first meaning is obvious, evident : it's a love song, about a man and a woman. We got the second meaning after reading an article about a crisis that Al Green experienced in the 1970s : he became a minister (a Protestant priest), and decided that his songs were really about the love for God. Then, after listening to Stand By Me , we also understood there was still a third meaning : it's about the struggle of African-Americans during the segregation, and the Civil Rights movement. So, Let's Stay Together can mean : the singer loves his wife / he loves God (or God loves him) / he loves his community
