The Witch correction

  1. When / where ?

The movie takes place in New England, in the early 17th century (early / mid / late). New England is a region in northern America where Puritans settled (coloniser) after 1620 (Pilgrim Fathers, thanksgiving).

Puritanism was a very austere version of Protestantism.

2. Historical Accuracy

Religion is pivotal (essential) in this Puritan society. Puritans believed that man's actions couldn't help him go to Heaven ; drinking, smoking, dancing or theatre was forbidden / frowned upon (mal vu), and were said to send you to hell.

thou, thine, thee... you / have, has / hast = even the language is different.

wilderness  /        society

3. Names of the characters

William + Katherine

Thomasin / Caleb / Mercy - Jonas / Samuel

4. William is a very strong father figure at first ; BUT in the end, he's accused of being weak, and a hypocrite.

Katherine is supposed to be the guardian of the household, BUT Thomasin thinks she's being unfair.

Thomasin will eventually (à la fin) sell her soul. Caleb looks at her in a strange way. The twins are lying all the time. And Samuel, even if he's just a toddler, might go to hell because he wasn't baptized.

It's about death on Facebook, what they do when people die. - In the text, we can see a man who talks about his dead friend, he's sharing news of his friend's death - His name is Anthony Dowdell, he was 39 years old. We saw Dowdell's facebook wall. Art & Power 4 gr A

  Today we worked on a different music style, Soul music. We started by listening to Al Green's Let's Stay Together .  We found the song was slow and a bit repetitive, with a verse and a chorus. there was also a male singer singing in Falsetto, and backing vocals. The first meaning is obvious, evident : it's a love song, about a man and a woman. We got the second meaning after reading an article about a crisis that Al Green experienced in the 1970s : he became a minister (a Protestant priest), and decided that his songs were really about the love for God. Then, after listening to Stand By Me , we also understood there was still a third meaning : it's about the struggle of African-Americans during the segregation, and the Civil Rights movement. So, Let's Stay Together can mean : the singer loves his wife / he loves God (or God loves him) / he loves his community
